Open Mic Tuesday
In North Vancouver

Maybe I'll play better this time.

Just a quick note that I'll be playing an Open Mic tomorrow night, Tuesday February 6th, at The MapleWood Pub, 1970 Spicer Road, North Vancouver. Their phone number is 604 924 1834.

As for how last night's Open Mic went: I sucked. I sucked bad. I played four pieces, and screwed up the first two so bad I had to stop playing them in the middle. I did better on the other two but made some mistakes.

I had awful stage fright. There is no amount of private practice that will prepare one for playing in front of a crowd, not if one gets stage fright - and I do.

But the only way to get over it is to get back on the horse and keep playing in public, and that's what I'll do.

The people at The Cellar were very encouraging though. Several of them came up to me afterwards and said I did fine, and the guy from The MapleWood Pub invited me to play his Open Mic.

After I played my piece Recursion, I told the audience they could download it and some other pieces from my website, and that I could give them one of my handbills so they wouldn't have to remember the URL. Several people asked for it after I was done playing.

After I gave her a handbill one girl asked me, "Why are you shaking?"

My piano teacher was very pleased I'd played in public. She asked me if I was nervous when I played, and she made some suggestions that should help in future live performances.

At my lesson today, I started learning Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The Mutopia Project has all three movements on its Beethoven Sonatas page, transcribed from a book whose copyright is expired so the scores can be placed in the public domain.

What that means is that I'll be allowed to offer free downloads of it once I learn it well enough to be worth recording. It will be a long time, though.

Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go practice, because I'm determined to get it right tomorrow night.
