Living with Schizoaffective Disorder

Southern Hospitality

There is an ancient legend - Roman I think but don't clearly recall -
of two young lovers whose parents forbade them to speak to each other.

Thisbe listens to Pyramus' soft words of love.

But they were neighbors; their gardens shared a common wall.

That wall had a small hole in it.

Her name is Jenny; she lives in Alabama. Just now I told her of this legend then said that she and I too shared a common wall, but on my side at least that small hole looks just like an iPhone 7.

I don't know the sound of her voice yet but I do know that were any Southern lady to say to me so much as "Good Morning!" I would lay down my life for her.

Jenny pointed out that I was "so serious". I agreed said "Yes I am a serious guy," but I have not yet told her why.

"When we meet in person that I am so calm may cause you dismay".

Bonita is exquisitely sensitive to the emotions of others; that enables her to be an insightful judge of character. But she always found me disturbing, as if she were staring directly into the vast, empty reaches of intergalactic space.

"You're an Enigma," Bonita once told me.

I said to Jenny "My passion is in my writing and in my music". I was concerned that she might not want to be with a man who spends all of his time thinking about - and writing about - the vast multitudes of ways we humans suffer - and for no apparent reason - self-inflicted agonies.

"Tomorrow I will call you and sing to you over the phone."

Of my street-performer repertoire my very favorite is "You Are My Sunshine". Surely that's a happy song! No. No it's not: when I sing "You Are My Sunshine" I sing of the songwriter's despair over the once great love he just lost.

From time to time when I sang it on the street, women - never men - would stop to listen.

And then they would burst into tears, thank me quietly, and walk away.
